Participation - "The forms of audience engagement that are shaped by cultural and social prototcols rather than by the technology itself" (Jenkins). Instead of strictly producers and consumers, participation is now more interactive.
The term was also considered synonymous with "interactivity" by Professor Richards on 1/9/12. This refers mostly to human-human interactivity, rather than human-computer interactivity.
A key aspect of Jenkin's definition of "participation" is an active role where participants interact with one another. These participants may include corporations, consumers, and groups of people. Also, participants are not created equally. Corporations exert greater power.
Participatory Culture - "Culture in which fans and other consumers are invited to actively participate in the creation and circulation of new content" (Jenkins).
